Get Notified When the EF 100-400mm IS II is Available for Pre-Order

The yet-to-be-announced EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II has been thoroughly leaked by all the Canon rumor sites. We’re expecting it to be officially announced and available for pre-order within 24-36 hours.

The lens is expected to carry a hefty $2199 USD introductory price tag, representing a 65% premium over our street price of $1329.99 AR for the Mark I version of the lens. This is the typical price increase seen for recent refreshes (namely, the 70-200 II, and 24-70 II). We’re yet to see if the performance from this long-awaited refresh justifies the higher price.

As usual, you can set a pre-order notification to be e-mailed immediately when the lens is available for pre-order, or you can marvel at our new price listing page for the lens (which is empty, for now).

If you purchase something through a link on our site, we may get a small share of the sale (at no cost to you). Please read our disclosure for more info.

I don’t understand why it would cost as much as the 70-200. f4.5 is a long way from f2.8. I suppose if the Image Stabilization mechanism has improved by a stop or maybe two, it might justify some increase but I don’t see why it should be given a 50% price increase.

I’ve used both and have the Mark 1 version of the 100-400 and use it mainly for race photography. I think that the bokeh is a lot better on the 70-200. If I were going to buy a new version of the 100-400, I’d want one that was faster.

Let the lens die already Canon. 100-400 is a terrible lens.

We won’t have a street price on the mk II for at least a few months (shorter or longer depending on supply and demand for this lens).
