What is everyone’s opinion on this lens? How is it for filming?

I’ve had mine over 3 years, rarely use it for video. I like it a lot, but mine is a very good copy.

Not bad with good lighting, would be better with wider aperture.

Since this lens uses USM focus, I would guess it’s not ideal for video. Look for something that uses STM instead. Can’t speak for the lenses overall quality, but L series lenses are pretty good. The F4 does limit it’s usefulness, but I would bet it is a sharp lens.

it’s a good walk around lens, but probably not much more. For the price above, I think it’s a still for an L lens. I got one myself some time back for about same price 🙂

Were these lenses defective from manufacturing, or were they dropped or something. What constitutes “refurbished” exactly? They’re still new lenses with Canon warranty?

Refurbished items from Canon USA come with a 1-year Canon USA warranty.

We don’t know exactly where refurbished items come from. The various theories include: store returns, customer returns, lenses pulled off the assembly line for quality control, inventory where packaging was damaged in-transit. Some people even theorize that completely new overstock items that weren’t able to sell are instead sold as refurbished.

This is a great lens, I have this for more than 10 years.
