The mk 1 version of the 500mm lens was only recently (January 2018) taken off the service list, 19 years after it was released. I would think you still have a while!
Canon generally stops supporting lenses about 6 years after a new release. For example, they stopped supporting the 300 2.8 IS V1 last year as the II had been out 6 years.
